Der neue "National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature" wurde heute vom "Librarian of Congress", James H. Billington, benannt. Walter Dean Myers wird am 10. Januar in sein Amt eingeführt. Die Kandidaten für den speziellen Botschafterposten werden zuvor von einem Auswahlkomitee, das sich aus Personen der Buchbranche zusammensetzt, bestimmt. Zu den Aufgaben des Botschafters heißt es in der Mitteilung aus der Library of Congress: "The position was created to raise national awareness of the importance of young people’s literature as it relates to lifelong literacy, education and the development and betterment of the lives of young people."
Initiiert wurde der Posten eines nationalen Kinderbuch-Botschafters in den USA 2008 vom Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, dem Children’s Book Council (CBC) und der CBC-Foundation Every Child a Reader. Die Amtszeit beträgt jeweils zwei Jahre. Finanzielle Unterstützung kommt von Penguin Young Readers Group, Scholastic Inc., HarperCollins Children's Books, Random House Children's Books, Candlewick Press und der Lois Lenski-Covey Foundation.
